Two days later Izzy passed Chad in the hallway of the ER unit. The notes of âPenny Laneâ never failed to come across his lips. Izzy grinned. That tingly feeling he always created in her appeared. She shouldnât be so giddy about the personal attention he showed her, but she couldnât help but like it.
They hadnât seen each other except at work since their trip to Nashville. It was just as well. She needed some distance from him. Needed time to sort her feelings. Izzy wasnât sure there would ever be enough time for her to figure those out. She went between accepting the feelings that were growing in her and convincing herself she should stay as far away from him as possible. The problem was she lived in his backyard and worked with him. That wouldnât be easy.
Recently her saving grace had been they were on different shifts until today. Even now the ER had been so busy they hadnât had a chance to talk to each other. Sheâd deny it if asked but she missed him.
Izzy walked up to the unit desk. The unit tech said, âDr. McCain has a fall patient coming into trauma one. You want to help him out?â
She couldnât say no. They made a great team in an emergency. âIâm on my way.â
Izzy entered the room. The patient had just arrived. The EMTs were still giving Chad the report.
The girl had a four-by-four bandage lying over the right side of her forehead.
âHi, Iâm Izzy, one of the nurses. Whatâs your name?â
âJudy.â
âJudy, may I take a look at your injury?â Izzy smiled.
The girl nodded.
A two-inch laceration marred her young face. A red line of dried blood went over her eye and down her cheek.
âCan you tell me what happened?â Izzy asked.
Chad joined them then.
âI hit the street curb hard,â the girl said.
Izzy said, âThis is Dr. McCain. Heâs going to take care of you. Heâs nice and youâll like him.â
Chadâs look met hers for a second. His eyes twinkled.
âJudy, can you tell me what happened?â
âI was walking along. I just fell.â She sounded perplexed.
Izzy looked to Chad. âIâll get her vitals.â
Chad said to Judy, âIâm going to need to check your eyes. Iâm afraid you might have a concussion.â He pulled down on her bottom eyelid.
âI donât want to be here,â Judy groaned.
Izzy spoke close to her ear. âI hate to say it but Iâm afraid youâre gonna have to stay. You need stitches and you need to be watched for a while. You took a hard hit to the head.â
Chad spoke to Judy. âCan you follow my finger?â He moved his finger back and forth in front of her face. âWhat made you fall?â
âI donât know,â the girl muttered.
âShe just went down.â A man who stood in the corner responded, adding, âIâm Judyâs dad.â
Chad asked Judy, âDoes anything hurt? Other than your head.â
âIt was hurting before I fell.â
Izzyâs gaze met Chadâs. That didnât sound good.
He nodded. Chad asked his next question in an unemotional voice, but Izzy recognized a note of concern.
